IFS THERAPY in Pittsburgh + online (CA/PA/LA + Japan)

Here’s the headline:
you’ve already got all the inner equipment
you need to heal and transform.

Now see if any of this sounds familiar…

You’ve been struggling, and, honestly, all the big feelings can get tiresome. It’s like different aspects of your mind are competing to run the show - you might work hard to put on a smile and avoid conflict, while another part of you feels resentful of all that smiling and is ready to quietly quit. Underneath all that might be a feeling of sadness or disconnection or that subtle “just not good enough” stuff that you’d rather avoid. It’s complex, and there’s just not time for all these feelings when life is busy and other people need your energy and creativity. You might have to perform “being OK” for a lot of people throughout the day.

It’s understandable that you might also have “figure it out” and “fix it” gears of your mind that jump in to try and solve your emotions … to limited success, since emotions are actually hard to solve like math problems. Or you might be familiar with a team of hard-working inner distractors: protective parts of you that keep your mind occupied with Netflix, that evening cocktail, or a hundred other things.

Maybe you’re just feeling stuck, depressed, or anxious, and you’re not sure why.

I get it.

With all that going on during any given day, it would only be fair to feel a bit exhausted by it all.

Services
Individual Therapy & Couples Counseling

IFS + mindfulness-based therapy

Now accepting new clients for teletherapy:
(Pennsylvania / California / Louisiana + Japan)

  • I offer both individual therapy and couples counseling. My approach is grounded in IFS, which is a powerful, modern therapy focused on the unique complexity of each person. I'm a Level 2 Trained IFS therapist, with hundreds of hours of training + thousands of hours using this approach to the benefit of diverse clients, just like you.

I also am trained in EMDR, which is another experiential, evidence-based therapy that complements IFS beautifully.

Additionally, I implement many concepts from Nonviolent Communication (NVC) into both couples and individual work, and infuse all of my therapy with mindfulness practices, particularly Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC).

Scroll down on my Services page for more info about each of these powerful approaches to healing.

  • In the primary therapy approach I use, IFS (or Internal Family Systems), there’s less pressure on you needing to tell your whole life story in order to get some relief. As some clients have pointed out, they already know their story! They’re looking to go deeper in understanding themselves.

Rather than just talking about our feelings and problems, which might be like a car that’s slightly elevated off the ground, pushing the gas with spinning wheels (and doing a lot of work!), experiential therapies like IFS and EMDR are about letting that car make contact with the road so we can get somewhere deeper in therapy.

  • Sessions with me would include a lot of encouragement to gently slow down and notice what emotions feel like in realtime in the therapy office. We might get connected to how sadness actually feels in your body (that’s why they call it a feeling, after all) or to let your worrying mind have the microphone and share its point of view without judgment from your more logical brain. We might visually describe how your anger shows up as we focus on it, all while staying curious about the secret history of big emotions in your life story.

  • The quality of our connections are so fundamental to our well-being. That’s why therapy with me would include a curious, friendly focus on how we relate to ourselves. Maybe we’ve labeled our tendency to overwork as a “good part” of who we are, and our exhausted, unmotivated energy as a “bad part”. What if we made a bit more space for all these sides of ourself to be known and to co-exist, like a loving parent who doesn’t play favorites?

I love working with creative people because experiential therapies are deeply creative and deeply human. We’ll work together to explore all the aspects of you that make you YOU. We may do this work visually, because we all learn and heal differently, not just through talking, but through feeling, noticing, visualizing, and ultimately, having a healing experience that is uniquely your own.

You’ve already taken the first step.

I’d love to play a part in your journey of healing and self-discovery. You don’t have to do it alone.
